Spring 2010 Season Announcement

Hello Broomballers!

I apologize for all of the emails and notes this week, but things have been a bit crazy with the ongoing snowpocalypse and the like. But this email is an important one.

It’s that time again!

That’s right - it’s once again time to register for the upcoming season of broomball.

Since we had such an overwhelming response to the first two seasons, we decided to give the people what they want and add a third, spring season of broomball to the DC Broomball calendar. The season will run from March 24, 2010 – May 12, 2010 and be held, once again, at the Tucker Road Ice Rink.

THIS WILL BE FINAL SEASON OF DC BROOMBALL UNTIL THE FALL, although we will continue to run pick-up games throughout the summer for those in dire need of a broomball fix.

There will be some fun changes taking place this season, including:

1) New earlier games: We are moving the games to a new, earlier time slot. The games will now be at 8PM and 9PM, instead of the original 9:15PM and 10:00PM. Now there’s NO excuse to skip coming to the bar after games!

2) More playing time: We are reserving 2 FULL HOURS of ice time per week instead of 1.5 hours. What does that mean for you? Longer periods (20 minutes per period instead of 18), stop time throughout the entire game, and no rink employees coming out at halftime to yell at Ryan. In other words, we’ll all have more playing time in every game.

3) Tournament play?! Some of you may have been confused about that email Jack sent out earlier about a tournament at College Park. Essentially, the rink organizers and broomball-minded individuals up at the Wells Rink are holding a local tournament. Instead of sending our travel team (the Nomadic Hordes), we’ve decided it might be a fun idea to let the spring teams go up and compete. Each team captain will be reaching out to their teams following the draft to gauge interest. Essentially, for just a few shekels in entrance fee ($75 PER TEAM), your spring team will be able to compete against the other teams from DC Broomball’s spring season AND other local teams. This is COMPLETELY VOLUNTARY and in no way a mandatory part of participating in our spring season…just a fun opportunity that we wanted to offer our players.

Cost for the season is only $80 for all individuals who register before February 24, 2010. After the early registration cut-off, registration jumps to $90 for the season. REGISTRATION OFFICIALLY CLOSES ON MARCH 17, 2010 SO THAT TEAMS CAN BE DRAFTED.

Hope to see you on the ice!

Week 4 Newsletter

Week 4 Highlights

Week four started off with a solid game between the Menstruaters and Broom Broom Pow. The green brooms of doom managed to tally first in both periods, but the Menstruators came back twice and forced overtime, where Dave Bloom notched his second goal and the game winner.

The second game saw the shorthanded Yellow Snowmen struggle against an overpowering Smurfs in a Blender. The Smurfs managed nine goals, almost half by stud center Kasey Kirby. Luke Streng, Tom “My Stick Brings All the Boys to the Yard” Zohlen, Brad Meder and Mike Levy also tallied for the Smurfs. In the second period, the Snowmen answered back with some physical play and the wily David Zarneke took advantage of a Smurf miscue to bury a goal in the final minutes of the game.

Standings

After one week of amazing broomball action, the standings are:

  1. The Menstruaters (W:4, T:0, L:0, P:8, GD:+6)
  2. Smurfs in a Blender (W:3, T:0, L:1, P:6, GD:+9)
  3. Broom Broom Pow (W:1, T:1, L:2, P:3, GD:-2)
  4. Yellow Snowmen (W:0, T:1, L:3, P:1, GD:-13)

Week 5 Schedule

Here’s the schedule for week five, with goalie, ref and scorekeeper assignments. As stated above, due to the weather-induced cancellation on 2/10, all week 5 games will be played on 2/17:

Game 1 (9:15PM): Home: Red Team (Captain: Bradford Neumann) / Goalie: Ryan Schradin
Away: Blue Team (Captain: John Crick) / Goalie: Sean Greeney
Score/Clock: Chris Matroniano / Sarah Desilets
Refs: Sarah Schradin / James Cargo

Game 2 (10:00PM): Home: Green Team (Captain: Sarah Schradin) / Goalie: Ryan Schradin
Away: Yellow Team (Captain: James Cargo) / Goalie: Sean Greeney
Score/Clock: John Crick / Judson Brooks
Refs: Bradford Miles Neumann / Brad Meder

Will Broom Broom Pow be the first challenger to take down the mighty Menstruaters? Will the Snowmen find the magic hat they need to bring the team to life against the surging Smurfs? We’ll find out tonight! We look forward to seeing you all on the ice!

Message from the Commissioner

Message from the Commissioner

Hello Broomballers!

The draft has been completed and the second season of DC Broomball is just days away. The ball officially drops on Wednesday, January 13, 2010, when four teams comprised of over 50 broomballers take the ice.

The captains met this afternoon for the draft and the resulting teams are below. If your captain has yet to reach out to your team yet, you can find your teammates and team color below. If your name does NOT appear on the rosters below but you registered to play in the winter 2010 season, please contact us ASAP at DCBroomball@gmail.com to get everything straightened out.

Your captain either has or will be contacting you shortly to appoint assistant captains and to discuss positions, lines and most importantly, team name, so keep an eye out for a note from them.

Attached, you’ll find the official league rules, schedule and rosters as PDFs. Directions to the rink are also included below. Please take a minute before Wednesday to review the league rules. This is imperative if everyone is going to hit the ground running when the season officially starts. For the first week, we’d also ask that you arrive to the rink early to meet your team and get your official DC Broomball t-shirts.

Just some quick notes:

Refs:  Our games are refereed by league members, not professional referees. This is done to keep costs down and the league accessible for everyone. In the rules you’ll notice that only captains and assistant captains may discuss calls with refs, but we will take that a step further and ask everyone to be respectful and considerate of your fellow league-mates who give up their time and voluntarily do a VERY difficult job week after week. That being said, we’re currently working on a schedule for the refs. If you are interested in being a ref, or want to learn the craft, please contact Ryan Schradin at dcbroomball@gmail.com.

Schedule:  The schedule is attached. We’ve worked hard to ensure that all teams get a fair share of both early and late games. Two players who are not playing in any given game have been assigned to work that game’s shot clock and score sheet. Once again, using league members for this duty keeps our costs down, and it’s actually quite easy and fun work that involves watching broomball and making the rink horn go off (always a good time). If you’ve been assigned to run the shot clock or score sheet and cannot for any reason perform that duty, please find a replacement for yourself, or switch dates with someone. If you have any questions about keeping score or running the clock, please find Ryan Schradin or Jack Fan prior to your assigned game and they will walk you through it.

Rides:  If you do not have a car and need a ride to the rink, cars will be leaving from the following locations prior to each night’s games. The name and contact info listed besides each location is the person driving. Please reach out to that person if you’d like to ride with them to arrange time and specifics. A majority of these individuals will stay for both games, so if you’re not looking to do the same, it may be a good idea to reach out to your teammates and see who lives near you and can give you a lift.

Goalies:  The league is short on goalies for this season. To counteract this problem, we’re using a goalie-by-committee, or mercenary-goalie situation.

Thank you all for registering for the winter 2010 season of DC Broomball. It’s hard to believe that in only two seasons we’ve grown so rapidly and added so many more talented and experienced broomballers. We’re dedicated to becoming one of the preeminent broomball leagues on the east coast, and in the country, and are extremely thankful that you’ve decided to join us for the ride.

See you all on the ice on Wednesday!

Broomball forever,

Jack Fan and Ryan Schradin
