Message from the Commissioner

Message from the Commissioner

Hello Broomballers!

The draft has been completed and the second season of DC Broomball is just days away. The ball officially drops on Wednesday, January 13, 2010, when four teams comprised of over 50 broomballers take the ice.

The captains met this afternoon for the draft and the resulting teams are below. If your captain has yet to reach out to your team yet, you can find your teammates and team color below. If your name does NOT appear on the rosters below but you registered to play in the winter 2010 season, please contact us ASAP at DCBroomball@gmail.com to get everything straightened out.

Your captain either has or will be contacting you shortly to appoint assistant captains and to discuss positions, lines and most importantly, team name, so keep an eye out for a note from them.

Attached, you’ll find the official league rules, schedule and rosters as PDFs. Directions to the rink are also included below. Please take a minute before Wednesday to review the league rules. This is imperative if everyone is going to hit the ground running when the season officially starts. For the first week, we’d also ask that you arrive to the rink early to meet your team and get your official DC Broomball t-shirts.

Just some quick notes:

Refs:  Our games are refereed by league members, not professional referees. This is done to keep costs down and the league accessible for everyone. In the rules you’ll notice that only captains and assistant captains may discuss calls with refs, but we will take that a step further and ask everyone to be respectful and considerate of your fellow league-mates who give up their time and voluntarily do a VERY difficult job week after week. That being said, we’re currently working on a schedule for the refs. If you are interested in being a ref, or want to learn the craft, please contact Ryan Schradin at dcbroomball@gmail.com.

Schedule:  The schedule is attached. We’ve worked hard to ensure that all teams get a fair share of both early and late games. Two players who are not playing in any given game have been assigned to work that game’s shot clock and score sheet. Once again, using league members for this duty keeps our costs down, and it’s actually quite easy and fun work that involves watching broomball and making the rink horn go off (always a good time). If you’ve been assigned to run the shot clock or score sheet and cannot for any reason perform that duty, please find a replacement for yourself, or switch dates with someone. If you have any questions about keeping score or running the clock, please find Ryan Schradin or Jack Fan prior to your assigned game and they will walk you through it.

Rides:  If you do not have a car and need a ride to the rink, cars will be leaving from the following locations prior to each night’s games. The name and contact info listed besides each location is the person driving. Please reach out to that person if you’d like to ride with them to arrange time and specifics. A majority of these individuals will stay for both games, so if you’re not looking to do the same, it may be a good idea to reach out to your teammates and see who lives near you and can give you a lift.

Goalies:  The league is short on goalies for this season. To counteract this problem, we’re using a goalie-by-committee, or mercenary-goalie situation.

Thank you all for registering for the winter 2010 season of DC Broomball. It’s hard to believe that in only two seasons we’ve grown so rapidly and added so many more talented and experienced broomballers. We’re dedicated to becoming one of the preeminent broomball leagues on the east coast, and in the country, and are extremely thankful that you’ve decided to join us for the ride.

See you all on the ice on Wednesday!

Broomball forever,

Jack Fan and Ryan Schradin
